Technology at Menlo School

At Menlo, we believe that engagement in the classroom provides the best student learning. Over the past several years, technology has supported the academic programs in various ways, including through the use of projectors and audio systems built into every classroom. This infrastructure has positioned the School well to move into the next phase of technology in education at Menlo. iPads allow students to take an even deeper and engaging ‘dive’ into their learning.

iPads at Menlo

As of the 2013-14 school year, all students at Menlo will be required to bring an iPad with them daily to school (Sixth graders should wait to bring their iPads until late October, when we will have an orientation program). The iPad program builds upon the technology already on campus, which includes computer labs in the Middle and Upper Schools, laptop carts, SMART boards and projection systems in all classrooms.

As you think about the new school year, you may want to become familiar with the logistics of how to rent or buy an iPad, school policies, financial assistance and frequently asked questions. You'll also need to think about a full-sized laptop or desktop computer for use at home.

Why the iPad? This device supports several goals:

  • To give students and teachers the tools they need to engage with digital materials "anytime, anywhere."
  • To give teachers new ways of interacting with students and learning materials.
  • To develop a common platform that promotes interaction and communication between teachers and students.
  • To reduce the physical load of bulky textbooks in backpacks while increasing access to instructional content.

All of us at Menlo are excited about the iPad's potential to enrich instruction. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Eric Spross, Director of Technology.

“The best use of iPads will be when they enhance the already strong relationship between the teachers and their students.”
