Menger Sponge and Euler’s Formula

Eighth graders dive into math using tape and cardboard.

In math club, a conversation about Platonic solids, polyhedra and Euler’s polyhedron formula led Sylvia Chen, Sophie Siminoff and Markus Leschly to build a series of cardboard polyhedra.

Meanwhile, building on some work on fractals, Bo Leschly and Drew Wadsworth finished a Menger Sponge, made exclusively out of business cards dontated by Menlo parents “just for kicks,” says math teacher Nat Lewis.
