Andrew Buchanan shot a 7-under 64 to net medalist honors and Menlo boys' golf finished fifth at the CCS Championship at Rancho Canada West Golf Course in Carmel Valley on Tuesday.
Menlo shot a team total 382, establishing a school-record low score for the CCS championship tournament, eclipsing the Knights' previous best of 389 set in 2010. Menlo finished just five strokes behind third-place qualifier Archbishop Mitty. Robert Louis Stevenson of Pebble Beach and Palma of Salinas finished first and second.
Buchanan, a junior, took first in a field of 65 players representing 24 teams. He tied the all-time CCS championship Individual scoring record of 64 set in 2010 by Menlo's Patrick Grimes, now playing for Stanford.
Buchanan carded five birdies and an eagle in his 7-under par round. Buchanan scored birdie, eagle, birdie on holes 16-18 to complete a bogey-free round. Buchanan is repeat medalist after winning the CCS regional tournament last week at Rancho Canada, shooting a 68.
Andrew Buchanan advances to the Nor Cal tournament next Monday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico as an individual representative for Menlo School.
Freshman Ethan Wong posted the second place score for Menlo shooting a 74 for 17th place. Wong finished strong going 1 under on his final four holes.
Senior Will Petit shot a 76, recording his personal-best high-school, 18-hole score in his final appearance of his four-year varsity golf career. Petit started off on a hot streak shooting 1-under par on the front nine. Petit went bogey free on the front nine and birded the tough par-5 sixth hole.
Senior Jackson Dean shot a solid 82 and Junior Max Garnick completed the scoring for Menlo by shooting 86.
In between the two CCS rounds, on Monday, May 14, Buchanan also competed at Pasatiempo at the U.S. Open local qualifying. Shooting a 70, 1-under par at Pasatiempo, Buchanan finished tied for third in the U.S. Open local qualifying round and advances to Sectional qualifying at Lake Merced on June 4.
