As a junior player, Shine earned a Top 10 ranking every year from 1962 to 1973. He was a four-time MVP at Los Altos High and a two-time CCS singles finalist. Shine was part of the CCS champion doubles team in 1971. In college at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, Shine was named first-team all-conference in 1975 and 1976. Before coming to Menlo, he coached at Pinewood School and Los Altos High School.
