GUIDING YOUR COLLEGE PROCESS

Year after year, the College Counseling team has the privilege of witnessing remarkable personal growth in our students.
As smooth seas do not make good sailors, determination, resilience, self-re ection, and con dence are all latent outcomes of the college application and admissions process. Sadly (but understandably), it’s a missed opportunity when students approach this process from a place of fear and trepidation, even going so far as to keep it at an emotional distance so as not to get hurt by outcomes. We are here to remind students that this process can actually be interesting, engaging, enjoyable, and fun! Here are some

      tips for students (and a little bit at the end for parents, too!) to best engage in the college application and admissions process from a place of self care and optimism.
➤Know your comfort level. Our o ce used to recommend keeping your college process completely private, but we’ve come to realize that’s not great advice for every student. We are all di erent; some will choose to keep their list to
themselves while others will keep friends and family abreast on every application update. The important message here is that you do what’s right for you and no one else, so please remember and honor that this process is about you.
➤Be honest. Whether you publicize your process or not, make sure others respect your boundaries. Communicate with your counselor, friends, and family about how you’d like
to be supported and how you will share updates. You must treat people how you want them to treat you, and setting expectations is fair.
➤Be patient. Your parents will likely ask you about college a lot. Remember, it’s natural for them to want to feel involved. This is
a big transition for them, too, so try to be kind. With that said, do remember that it’s okay to remind them from time to time that you feel con dent in this
