Far-Reaching Research

Travel-research award gives students the opportunity to more deeply explore interests.

With the generous support of The HAND Foundation, Menlo offers an award to fund selected students to undertake an in-depth investigation, scholarly research, or a social entrepreneurship project within the United States or abroad over the summer

In 2015, P. J. Frantz ’17 and Jamie Holmstrom ’17, both accomplished musicians and vocalists, were selected to travel to Havana to study the Cuban music style Son, and explore its representation of Cuban culture. The duo visited Cuba last summer to take classes at the Instituto Superior De Artes (The Institute of Superior Arts) and study with the musician Lali. They also attended concerts and interviewed a number of local musicians. Moved by their experience, they plan to host a fundraising event to help provide instruments for the Institute where they studied. P. J. and Jamie have also introduced the Menlo community to Son, performing at recent assemblies.

Kian Seddighnezhad ’16 received a grant to investigate the evolution, techniques, and significance of the art of Persian rug making in an effort to better understand Iranian culture, history, and society. He spent time during the summer visiting rug makers in Iran and learning about the history, economic significance, and different techniques and materials used in the artform. He presented his findings at an Upper School assembly.
