Service Opportunities For All

Upper School Student Life is focusing on “greater purposes” this quarter, and the Community Service Club, Knight Vision, is organizing a range of service opportunities for students. There’s even a service day for families.

Join us in being a part of a purpose greater than ourselves by getting involved in any of these events! In addition to the annual Special Olympics, Menlo will be having a Family Service Day with LifeMoves, participating in a beach clean up with the Surfrider Foundation, and holding a drive for cleaning supplies for Catholic Charities Refugee resettlement program.

Cleaning Supply Drive for Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program in the Bay Area (March 20 - 31)

Many nonprofits work with refugees to assist them in resettlement. Due to the current war Syria, the number of refugees has drastically increased. In order to support the refugee crisis, Knight Vision is holding a drive to gather materials to help ease refugees into their resettlement. All donations in any quantity are encouraged. For more information about Catholic Charities and their refugee resettlement program, please visit this site: https://www.catholiccharitiesscc.org/refugee-resettlement or email Ellie Kunwar at ellie.kunwar@menloschool.org

Supplies needed: brooms, vacuums, paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, etc.), sponges, trash bags, hand soap, hangers, first aid kits, laundry detergent, and all-purpose cleaners

Special Olympics (April 22)
Time: 8:30am-2:30pm
Location: Cartan Field

Special Olympics is an organization that aims to foster the joy of sports by organizing sporting events for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics gives those with disabilities the opportunity to improve their athletic abilities, demonstrate courage, and experience joy through athletic events. Over 4.7 million athletes from 169 countries participate in various Special Olympics. Every year, Menlo holds the track and field events at Cartan Field. At these events, students can buddy up with an athlete (helping their athlete get to each of their events and cheering them on through it), volunteer to set-up, clean-up, sign-in, time events, or work at the face-painting booth. We encourage all students to participate, as it is a memorable event in both the Menlo student and Special Olympics athlete’s year. Sign ups begin March 28 (an email will be sent out to all students).

Beach Clean Up (April 30)
Time: 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Location: Baker beach
Transportation: Bus from Menlo
Organization: Surfrider Foundation

This April, Knight Vision is participating in a beach cleanup with the Surfrider Foundation. The Surfrider Foundation aims to protect the world’s oceans and beaches by helping to ensure beach access, maintain clean water, preserve coastal ecospheres, protect ocean life, and stop and decrease the effects of plastic pollution. We will depart Menlo at 9:00 am and return at 1:00 pm. For more information, go to https://www.surfrider.org/our-work.

Family Service Day (May 20)
Time: 11:00 am-1:00 pm
Location: The Haven Family House
Organization: Life Moves

On May 20, the Menlo community is participating in a Family Service Day at the Haven Family House from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. The Haven Family House is a part of LifeMoves, which is a nonprofit dedicated to ending the cycle of homelessness. We will be hosting a barbecue and will be playing games with the kids. This event is open to all students, grades 6-12, and their families. Please contact Jessie Brugos at jthomasbrugos@menloschool.org if your family would like to participate in the event.
