Earl Koberlein named Director of Athletics

Stanford Senior Associate Athletic Director will take reins in late May.

Menlo School is pleased to announce Earl Koberlein as its new Director of Athletics.

Koberlein is coming to Menlo from Stanford University where since 2006, he served as the senior associate athletic director for intercollegiate sports.

“Among this powerful group, Earl stood out in his proven ability to mentor and support coaches and in his deep and proven connection to students,” Menlo Head of School Than Healy said. “Earl is someone who recognizes the power of athletics to teach character, and his experiences at Stanford have enabled him to develop a program to support this goal for our students.”

Koberlein succeeds Kris Weems, who is now an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors G-League team in Santa Cruz.
A Stanford men’s basketball player from 1982-86, Koberlein returned to Stanford in 1993 as the men’s basketball administrative assistant.  He was promoted to director of intercollegiate sports and championships in 1996, was named an assistant athletic director in 1999 and associate athletic director in 2001 before being named to his current post in 2006.

“I will work hard to provide an outstanding student-athlete experience for the Menlo student-athletes,” Koberlein said.  “It took a special place to pull me away from Stanford, and Menlo is an exciting opportunity for me to positively impact the lives of many young student-athletes.  I look forward to getting to work at Menlo and helping transform young lives.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for my experience at Stanford University,” Koberlein said. “I would like to thank all the phenomenal coaches, student-athletes and staff that I have had the pleasure to work with and learn from over the past 25 years. The experience has truly shaped who I am today.  The commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics is a noble pursuit that I cherish and am totally committed to, and I wouldn’t leave Stanford for an institution that didn’t share similar goals of academic and athletic excellence.’’

His responsibilities included overseeing the men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, wrestling, lacrosse and softball programs. Koberlein oversaw sports medicine, sports performance, sports nutrition and sport psychology.  Koberlein has served on the NCAA Men’s Soccer committee and has served as an NCAA site representative for numerous NCAA Baseball Championships.  Koberlein also served as a member and chair of the NCAA’s Olympic Sport Liaison Committee from 2011-14.

“Earl will serve the coaches and students well, and with tremendous passion and integrity,” said Bernard Muir, Stanford Director of Athletics. “Earl is a highly qualified, seasoned administrator who prioritizes student-athlete welfare and genuinely cares about providing the best possible student-athlete experience. “

Koberlein graduated from Stanford with a degree in psychology in 1987 and went on to play professional basketball in Australia. He earned a master’s in sport management from USF in 1994.

Koberlein will begin his new role May 29.
