Menlo Middle School students and their grandparents came together for a spring afternoon on campus
On Friday, May 4, 2018, Menlo welcomed more than 120 students’ grandparents to the Middle School for a sunny afternoon of refreshments, time in the classroom, and student performances.
Parent volunteers led grandparents to the Middle School Quad, where the Middle School steel pan band played, and students met their grandparents for food, photos, and socializing. As the afternoon progressed, some families chose to spend their time lounging in the shade, talking with other families, and sharing stories across generations, while others took a quick tour around campus, led by their students.

At the conclusion of lunch, grandparents accompanied students to their B Block classrooms, where they met faculty and learned more about academics at the Middle School.
Following that period, the entire group gathered in the West Gym, where Than Healy addressed them, thanking the grandparents for all they do for students. He introduced Mary Alexander, herself a current grandparent and past parent at Menlo, to speak about the various events and opportunities designed to allow grandparents to get involved at the School. Middle School Community Service Learning Coordinator, and Spanish teacher, Marisa LaValette then spoke, sharing some details about the Middle School service curriculum.
To conclude the day, the audience was treated to performances from Middle School choral groups, a dance routine, and a number from this year’s spring musical, Oliver! The Musical, with lead vocals from sixth grader Lila Gold and seventh graders Dylan Gold and Sean Nesamoney.
Thank you to all the grandparents who were able to attend and to the parent volunteers who gave their time and efforts to put on such a wonderful event. We hope to see all of you back at the School soon!
