Girls’ lacrosse lands WBAL Tournament championship

Menlo girls' lacrosse defeated Saced Heart Prep 13-11 to win the tournament title.

The Menlo girls’ lacrosse team put on a masterful demonstration of discipline, overturning Sacred Heart Prep 13-11 to take the West Bay Athletic League Tournament championship Saturday at Sequoia High.
The Knights (13-6, 9-3) finish round-robin in second place, and is the tournament champion. Menlo took a 7-5 halftime lead then held on late in the game to maintain their lead. With 5:15 remaining, the Knights
“They executied the game plan, which was to burn a lot of time, keep possession as long as possible and keep the ball away respectfully and with diligence. It would be easy to try to not keep running, or shoot at an empty net in those last minutes, but they realized how important that was going to be, ” Shaeffer said.
From the start, the short-handed Knights took the lead. Harvard-bound senior Charlotte Swisher poured in five goals and an assist. Bella Scola, who is set to continue lacrosse and her studies at Colorado College, posted four goals and an assist. Junior Page Wolfenden had a goal, two assists and five draw controls. Alyssa Sahami, a junior, made six saves.
“They really did a great job of staying poised,” Shaeffer said. “Our JV call-up players really stepped up, too, because we were able to play 7 v 7 and that was huge in our preparation for M-A and Prep,” Shaeffer said.
