Football loses to Santa Clara

The Menlo football team opened Friay’s game against Santa Clara with an exclamation point and ended it wth another, but fell in a 16-14 non-league loss at home.
The Knights (1-2) got a 28-yard kickoff return to start the game at the 33. Samson Axe picked up two big gains of 17 and 44 before catching a 4-yard pass from fellow senior Justin Sellers for a 7-0 lead just four plays into the game.
Menlo senior Jaden Richardson breaks through a would-be Santa Clara tackler Friday In the second, the Knights threatened again but Santa Clara tied the score on Rocco Rilah’s 11-yard pass to Joseph Hernandez. Santa Clara would score in the last seconds of the half with a 23-yard field goal. Capitalizing on turnovers, SC made a goal-line stand to start the third, then recovered a fumble before an 81-yard TD pass for a 16-7 lead.

Knights senior James Marren batted down two passes midway and late in the third on Bruins’ drives that eventually ended in punts.
The Knights kept up the fight, getting ideal field position at the Bruins’ 30 on a punt. A pass intereference call put them at the 16 and two plays later, senor Kevin Alarcon threaded the ball between two defenders, and senior Jaden Richardson pulled in a one-handed catch for a 26-yard touchdown.
Menlo next plays host to Francis Parker at 4:00 pm on Friday, Sept. 20
