Catching Up With Menlo Alumni: October

News and notes shared by Menlo alumni near and far

Ashley Ledbetter Dombkowski ’88, Scott Barkley ’88, Jim Hoppe ’88, Allison Shaheen Virsik ’88, John Arrillaga ’88, and Bret Sokoloff ’88 (pictured left to right) met up at a Stanford football game last month and toasted John’s upcoming 50th birthday. Later in September, Scott, Bret, their friend Todd Masters, and Ashley’s husband, Brian Dombkowski (pictured left to right) visited Madison, Wisconsin, for a football game between Wisconsin and Northwestern.

In late September, Kirsti Kaiser McCleary ’88 (center) celebrated her birthday with her husband, Dave (right), and Allison Shaheen Virsik ’88 (left).

Last month, The New York Times announced Nick Casey ’01 would cover the 2020 political campaign for the paper. Nick had been the Times’ Andes bureau chief since 2016.

Sophia Zahoudanis Kinell ’04 has moved from New York City back to the Bay Area, where she’s working to establish Phillips auction house in San Francisco. She joined the company in 2017 after a decade working for Sotheby’s in New York.

Jessica Houghton ’17 was named a UC Berkeley Athletic Study Center Scholar-Athlete of the Week in September. The school cited her work as “a research assistant in a cognitive neuroscience laboratory, investigating working memory using fMRI and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation,” and her work as a peer mentor for other science students. Jessica also competes on the Cal women’s volleyball team.

Kristin Sellers ’18 was highlighted by Palo Alto Online for her performance on the Brown University women’s volleyball team. Kristin has played a major role in the Brown team’s resurgence early this season, helping them to an 8-2 record, matching the program’s best start in its history.

JH Tevis ’18 was also named a UC Berkeley Athletic Study Center Scholar-Athlete of the Week in September. The university said, “JH’s pursuit of active learning stems from his curiosity of humanities in various contexts. In his pursuit of international relations and business, he is inspired by fluency in multiple languages and driven to further enhance his communication skills.” This year, JH is redshirting on the Cal football team.
