Girls’ basketball splits tight WBAL games, tops Vanden

Menlo's Avery Lee scored a game-high 20 in a WBAL win at Woodside Priory

1.18.2020 – Menlo girls’ basketball defeated Vanden in the first of two games of the Martin Luther King Jr  Tournament at Pittsburg High on Saturday. 

Junior guard Avery Lee scored 28 points, including 13 of 20 from the free-throw line. Fellow junior Coco Layton finished with eight points.

Menlo (13-2) next plays Ukiah on Monday at City College-San Francisco.

1.17.2020 –In a whirlwind seven-day span with three tightly contested league games, the Menlo girls’ basketball fell to host Sacred Heart Prep 59-55 in overtime Friday night.

Menlo junior guard Avery Lee led the Knights, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore Sharon Nejad added 13 points and nine rebounds while senior Maeia Makoni had eight points and eight rebounds. Junior Coco Layton finished with four three-pointers.
The Knights trailed entering the second period, then the Knights surged ahead with a 10-point run after junior Georgia Paye dropped a three-pointer, then Lee scored on a layup. Senior Maeia Makoni sank a three-pointer, then Lee drove across the baseline for a 21-12 advantage. Layton added a three-pointer on a feed from Lee,and the Knights entered halftime ahead 28-20.
In the fourth, Grace Florendo made a pair of threes, including one to give SHP a lead. Nejad scored on a Paye feed and Layton added another three to give Menlo a 48-43 lead. Lee made two more free throws with 7.6 seconds left but Caroline Barclay’s basket as time expired pushed the game to overtime.
SHP’s Denise Stine,who finished with X points and 14 rebounds,scored six of her team’s points in the overtime period.
Menlo gets back on the court and next plays Vanden in the MLK Shootout at Pittsburg High.

Menlo 47, Woodside Priory 43

The Menlo girls’ basketball team held on to defeat Woodside Priory 47-43 in a West Bay Athletic League game Tuesday on the road.
The Knights (12-1 overall, 2-0 league) led 24-19 at the half, and thanks to a strong first quarter stayed in front. Menlo junior guard Avery Lee scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter. Coco Layton, also a junior, made four three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Just as she did in the Knights’ win over Pinewood, senior Maeia Makoni dropped a crucial three-pointer with 1.5 minutes left to give the Knights a six-point edge. 
Menlo next plays at Sacred Heart Prep at 6:00 pm on Friday.
