Bill Shine to be inducted into USTA-NorCal Hall of Fame

Director of tennis has coached Knights for quarter of century

In his 25th season at Menlo School, boys’ and girls’ tennis coach Bill Shine will be inducted into the USTA-NorCal Hall of Fame, scheduled for late June.

Bill Shine Shine has coached the Menlo boys’ and girls’ teams to a combined 25 Central Coast Section titles and 20 CIF-NorCal championships since he started in 1996. He holds an overall record of 1074-154 through Feb. 27, and both his girls’ and boys teams hold the state record for consecutive league dual-match victories. The Menlo girls wrapped up their 26th straight league title and the boys entered the spring season having won 23 league championships in a row. Shine led his girls to NorCal and Central Coast Section championships in the fall, and the boys got three matches in before the season was stopped due to Corona virus concerns.
Shine is scheduled to be recognized in a ceremony Oct. 23, postponed from its original date in June, at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo. Dick Gould, former Stanford Director of Tennis, will present him.
“This is quite an honor to be selected to the the USTA NorCal Tennis Hall of Fame,” Shine said. “To be able to play and coach nearly my whole life in Northern California is a dream come true. I owe this to a lot of people, like Dick Gould, who along the way, helped me become the coach I am today.”
His teams have never lost a league match; no other coach in San Mateo County history has been so successful. Last spring, Shine was inducted into the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame after wrapping up a season in which he reached his 1,000th win.
He began his high-school coaching career at his alma mater Los Altos High when the boys went 19-3, then coached the boys’ and girls’ teams at Pinewood.
As a junior player, Shine earned a top-10 ranking every year from 1962 to 1973. He was a four-time MVP at Los Altos High and a two-time CCS singles finalist. Shine was part of the CCS champion doubles team in 1971. In college at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, Shine was named first-team all-conference in 1975 and 1976.
