Boys’ water polo takes third at Roche Invitational

Knights roll in semifinals
Greg Hilderbrand had 13 goals for the Knights in two wins Friday.

Hosting the 23rd annual Scott Roche Invitational, the Menlo School boys’ water polo welcomed 15 teams from up and down the state Friday. The Knights finished the day with a 17-8 win over Clovis West to take third place in the tournament, which was co-hosted by Menlo-Atherton. 

La Jolla defeated Valley Christian 17-9 to take the tournament title.

Menlo School missed by a goal in their quest for a fifth Roche tournament title . In the third-place game, Menlo rolled past Clovis West 17-8 fueled by Greg Hilderbrand’s six goals and four assists. Tommy Kiesling and Jack Murad each added a hat trick. Michael Fang added three assists. Cormac Mulloy posted 10 saves and Finn Byrne added four for the Knights .

Day 1 

9.10.2021 – Co-hosted by Menlo-Atherton, the tournament began Friday afternoon and continues today at both pools. 

The Knights won both matches, starting with a 15-11 victory over Grossmont of San Diego before a 16-8 quarterfinals win over Buchanan. 

Greg Hilderbrand poured in 13 goals for the day while Tommy Kiesling added five, and both Jack Murad and Jackson Kay had four. Kiesling also posted eight assists. Finn Byrne and Cormac Mulloy combined for 18 saves for the Knights whlle Murad led the team with four ejections earned over the two games.
