Menlo sophomore Ryan Schnell recorded a pair of strikeouts to end a Menlo-Atherton threat in the seventh inning.

2.25.2022 – In a dramatic season opener against a crosstown rival, the Menlo baseball team held off host Menlo-Atherton 5-4 on Thursday.
Menlo dug deep in the seventh with the score knotted at 3. The Knights loaded the bases with one out and sophomore Jason Lee drew a walk, and Carson Cleage came home with the go-ahead run. Menlo would score again when Colin Dhaliwal scored on Sudar Kartheepan RBI groundout for a 5-3 lead. M-A added a run on a sac fly but Ryan Schnell would come up with a pair of strikeouts to seal the win.
“They finished,” Menlo Co-Coach Greg Hart said. “It’s a seven-inning game and they worked hard to the very end. It was truly a great team win.”
The Knights evened the score at 3 in top of fifth when junior Jake Bianchi singled to right-center to drive in Carson Cleage, who walked, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. M-A got a runner on second before second baseman Jacob Lee made a double play on a liner to end the fifth inning.
On a full count with two out, centerfielder Trey McNair made a brilliant diving catch to snare a liner to center-right, leaving a runner stranded in the sixth.
