5.31.2022 – Entering his 28th season at Menlo School, boys’ and girls’ tennis coach Bill Shine was inducted into the USTA-NorCal Hall of Fame on June 10. Originally announced as an inductee in 2020 before the start of the pandemic, Shine was scheduled to be recognized in a ceremony June 10 at Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo, with Dick Gould, former Stanford Director of Tennis, presenting.

He enters a class with Stanford’s Taube Family Director of Men’s Tennis Paul Goldstein, Claremont Resort Director of Tennis Rosie Bareis and former pro player and current pro at Seascape in Aptos Melissa Gurney Van Ness.

“This is quite an honor to be selected to the USTA NorCal Tennis Hall of Fame,” Shine said. “To be able to play and coach nearly my whole life in Northern California is a dream come true. I owe this to a lot of people, like Dick Gould, who along the way helped me become the coach I am today.”

Shine has coached the Menlo boys’ and girls’ teams to a combined 27 Central Coast Section titles and 21 CIF-NorCal championships since he started in 1996. He has an overall record of 1,146-163, and both his girls’ and boys’ teams hold the state record for consecutive league dual-match victories. In fall 2019, the Menlo girls won their 26th straight league title, and in 2021 advanced to the CCS and NorCal Championships for the fourth time in seven seasons. The boys just collected their 25th league championships in a row. Last spring, Shine was inducted into the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame after wrapping up a season in which he reached his 1,000th win.
