11.30.22 – The Menlo School boys’ soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 draw in a match with Carlmont in non-league play Wednesday.
Both teams scored in the first half with Carlmont picking up a penalty kick in the ninth minute.
Menlo junior Andre Gonzalez Lombera showed his speed to win a foot race with the Carlmont center back, leveling the score at 1-1 with 11:38 left in the half. The remainder of the game saw both sides with opportunities to pull ahead, including three shots off the posts for Menlo.
“The first game of the year is always an exciting one,” First-year Menlo Coach Daniel Hicker said. “For me it was a special one because I got to see the team play for the first time. We had a lot of moments of leadership and discipline today, which we have been working to instill since Day One. I am proud of our players and coaching staff today. We get back to work tomorrow.”

Menlo next plays at Aragon on Friday.
