Girls’ soccer goes 3-0, tops Urban, Paly, Gunn

Knights advance to finals of Firebird Classic

12.10.2022 – In the Firebird Classic, Menlo girls’ soccer beat Gunn 2-1 on Saturday and advances to the final against Lincoln next week.
The Knights broke open a 0-0 halftime time with Josie Lee scoring on a cornerkick from Sasha Bernthal. Roya Rezaee scores the eventual winner also from Bernthal before the Titans convert a free kick.

Menlo’s Sasha Bernthal (21) assisted on both goals in a 2-1 semifinals win over Gunn on Saturday.

Menlo 3, Urban 2

12.8.2022 – The Menlo girls’ soccer team held off persistent Urban of San Francisco for a 3-2 victory Thursday
The Knights improved to 4-1, and will resume play in the Firebird Classic with a game against Gunn at 10:40 am Saturday.
Menlo’s Sasha Bernthal broke away after taking a pass from Krista Arreola for the go-ahead goal with 12:33 left in the game.
Menlo scored first on a beautiful strike by Colby Wilson coming in from the right side with 8:16 left in the first half. Urban countered, scoring with 3:45 left left in the second quarter and the teams went into the half knotted at 1.
The Knights went ahead again when Tabitha Corcoran delivered a free kick with 28:28 left in the game. Urban got the equalizer eight minutes later, before Menlo answered with the winner.

 

Menlo 2, Palo Alto 1

12.6.2022 – The Menlo girls’ soccer team took home a 2-1 victory over host Palo Alto in the second round of the Firebird Classic on Tuesday.
The Knights, who are coming off a 4-1 win over Homestead, improve to 3-1 for the season.

Senior Emily Gruber delivered the winner with 14 minutes left in regulation. After Dorothy Zhang maneuvered out of traffic and Lila Gold sent a pass to Gruber, who broke free to score.
In the first half, sophomore Roya Rezaee scored in the 28th minute off an assist by Audrey Hochstetler, and the Knights took a 1-0 halftime lead. Senior Tabitha Corcoran paved the defense.
Menlo took several shots to open the second half, including one in the net called back for offsides. Then, Paly struck with 30 minutes left to tie the score.
