Girls’ soccer closes historic season in CCS Open
2.18,2023 - The Menlo girls’ soccer team wrapped up a remarkable season after falling 3-1 to a powerful Mountain View team in the CCS Open quarterfinals Saturday night.
The Spartans scored on a free kick 10 minutes in then added another goal right before halftime. Mountain View added another goal midway through the second half but not before freshman Bianca Putanec made a stellar save of a penalty kick. The Knights weren’t backing down even in the waning minutes when senior Abby Becker delivered a goal.
Menlo finished with a 15-2-4 overall record and went 8-0-2 to win the West Bay Athletic League Championship. The Knights are also the first in program history to secure a CCS Open Division berth and reportedly, first team from a B league (of which WBAL is a part) to secure an Open bidThe Knights bid farewell to its senior corps of Helen Barkley, Abby Becker, Sasha Bernthal, Tabitha Corcoran, Ellie El-Fishawy, Hannah Gorospe, Ellie Gruber, Finley Riley, Sam Sellers, and Colby Wilson.
