Swimmers land titles, CCS bids, PRs at WBAL finals
Menlo swimming brought home two league champions, more CCS qualifying times and scores of PRs in the finals of the West Bay Athletic League Championships on Saturday.
In the team competition at Sacred Heart Prep, Menlo’s boys placed third of nine teams and the girls’ team took fourth of 13 teams. Next up is the CCS Championships, which begin with trials on Friday, followed by Saturday’s finals at Hollister High.
The boys 200 medley relay of senior Andrew Tung, juniors Sam Warman, Connor Grant and Ben Kossow won a league championship, coming in at 1:43.55, easily making the CCS cut and beating its closest competitor by nearly three seconds. Grant swam the 50 butterfly split in 22.4.
Grant was the league champion in the 100 butterfly, winning by over 2 seconds in 51.83
The Knights 400 free relay of senior Annika Porteous, and juniors Kenya Cassidy, Scarlett Gamble and Sage Huddleston came in 3:54.03, good for a CCS cut and third place.
The Knights boys 200 free relay made the CCS cut. Again, Grant, Tung, Warman and Kossow combined to finish in 1:32.89 for fourth.
The Knights had a strong showing in boys’ 100 back: Grant took third in another CCS-qualifying time of 56.51 followed closely by junior Alex Boesch, who was fourth in 56.51 in the finals. Brendan Wong won 100 back consolation final. Tung placed fifth in the 100 breast stroke in 1:05.19.
Huddleston was fifth in the girls’ 100 free, .10 from the CCS standard, finishing in 55.49. Porteous finished fifth in the 500 free in 5:35.88
