Menlo football came out of the second half with a charge and staved off a persistent Carlmont team 49-41 at home Saturday.
The Knights (2-0) jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead after an electric 61-yard run by junior quarterback Jack Freehill, who finished with six touchdowns, two rushing and four passing. Three of those scoring passes went to senior Jamie Forese.
Freehill completed 18 of 30 passes for 177 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 71 yards in six carries and two TDs. Fellow junior Chuck Wynn totaled 153 rushing yards in 31 carries and a TD.

Carlmont (1-1) responded with four unanswered scores to take a 27-14 halftime lead.
The Knights went to work coming out of the half, knocking the ball loose then senior John Floyd recovered. Junior Chuck Wynn ran in from the 6. The Scots got one play in on their possession before Knights senior Tyler Fernandez recovered a fumble, Menlo capitalized on a seven-play, 56-yard drive then senior Jack Enright scored from the 15 and Menlo took back the lead 28-27.
Carlmont countered with a scoring drive to take the lead at 33-28. Next, the Knights traveled 62 yards before Freehill found Forese, and Menlo jumped ahead 35-33 to start the fourth quarter.
A pair of defensive plays generated the winning scores: Knights junior Liam Pappalardo came out of a scrum with a fumble recovery. Menlo extended the lead to 42-30 on Forese’s second TD. Fernandez picked up and interception, and the Knights responded with Freehill’s keeper.
