Water Under the Bridge

Menlo’s Bridge to Engineering, Science and Technology (M-BEST) program encourages students to study science. At a recent workshop, one alum led a water filtration activity for sixth graders.

Maggie Dutton ’05 is a Water Resources Engineer at the California Department of Water Resources. On a Saturday in March, she led a hands-on activity with sixth graders to teach them the engineering of water filtration.

The activity was part of one of M-BEST’s regular Saturday workshops, which focus on different themes and bring in outside scientists and experts to talk about and demonstrate their work–and to act as role models for our students. The theme that week was “engineering in the world around us,” and also featured Intel Principal Engineer Dr. Eve Schooler.

Later that month, M-BEST students also got the chance to visit Google, where they toured the Googleplex and took on a Google-created design thinking challenge.
