Service Stories

“People deserve, even if they are homeless, a nice place to stay and a recognition of their self worth.” That’s one lesson the sophomores learned on their service day.

Serving lunch to hungry clients, planting ground cover to restore Milagra Ridge vegetation, making oobleck with kids, and building a new vegetable garden: the Sophomore Class spent its day of service doing those tasks at a variety of local agencies. At St. Anthony’s Padua Dining Room, Golden Gate Parks Conservatory, the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, and Hoptel Shelter for veterans, the students built relationships with kids and adults from different communities and learned more about the environment.

Each Sophomore advocact group had the chance to choose one of Menlo’s partner agencies to work with and a social injustice to address, including homelessness, at-risk youth, hunger and the environment. Before the day, they had in-depth discussions to gain a strong understanding of the issue and the agency’s work.

Afterwards, the sophomores shared their reflections from the day on a class blog. And the kids from the Boys and Girls Club sent a video thank-you card!
