selected CCS freshman of the year, took 17th. Miranda won seven races leading up to state and took fourth at the Div. I-III Mt. Sac. Invitational.  e Menlo girls set their place
in program history a er taking second at CCS for Menlo’s  rst section Div. IV trophy and then advanced to the state meet. Paced by sophomores Kyra Pretre and Charlotte Tomkinson, who led a deep team of all underclassmen, the girls  nished 18th.
ATHLETICS
Highlights
 Menlo enjoyed a historic, record-breaking fall sports campaign. For the  rst time in program history, every
fall team advanced to the Central Coast Section playo s,
and  ve of those teams automatically quali ed for CCS as league champions. Football and boys’ and girls’ water polo advanced to section title games, and volleyball returned to
the Open Division, spanning schools of all sizes, for section and NorCals. Mark Newton ’88, in his last season as Menlo football coach, won Coach of the Year (see sidebar), and  ve players were selected as their league’s most valuable athlete: Robert Miranda ’18 (boys’ cross country), Taylor Gould ’19 (girls’ tennis), JH Tevis ’18 (football-defense), Dillon
Grady ’19 (football-special teams), and Sam Untrecht ’19 (boys’ water polo). Fi y players were named to all-league teams. Menlo athletes excelled in the classroom, too. Football won a CCS Scholastic Championship, and two other teams ranked in the top  ve for highest collective GPAs in their respective sports: boys’ cross country (second) and girls’
golf (third).

Both teams advanced to the CCS Championships for the  rst time since 2014. Robert Miranda ’18 ran away with the section title, setting a league record on the course, while Kamran Murray ’21, the fastest freshman of the day, took sixth. At the state meet, Miranda  nished third while Murray,

FOOTBALL
8-5 overall, 4-1 PAL-Ocean champions, CCS  nalists, CCS Scholastic champions
A er securing league and section championships, Menlo earned an automatic bid to the playo s and then  nished its season in the CCS championship game, falling to undefeated Gilroy. Seniors/captains Baily Deeter, Aidan Israelski, Emilio Simbeck, and JH Tevis led a skilled and tough- minded corps which prevailed to win back-to-back PAL titles and its  rst league championship since 2006.  e seniors and a talented core of juniors and a sophomore made sure the  nal coaching season for Mark Newton ’88 was a remarkable one (see sidebar).
