Menlo boys’ basketball overcame a slow start and wrapped up a 55-48 victory over a persistent Pinewood team in WBAL play Tuesday night.
The Knights (10-8 overall, 2-3 league) rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit with a 20-9 run.
Sophomore Tres Onyejekwe neared a triple-double, pacing the Knights with 14 points, 14 rebounds, nine steals and four assists.
Four-year guard Ethan Zhao posted 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists on senior night. Knights senior Evan Arcilla sparked Menlo’s comeback, sinking back-to-back three-pointers with 2:32 left in the first half to close the Panthers’ lead to four. He finished with 11 points. The Knights’ defense forced a shot-clock violation before Zhao hit a jumper and Onyejekwe’s breakaway dunk put the Knights ahead 27-25, and a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Senior night ended with a fantastic finish: senior manager Jack Edwards came into the game in the fourth - his first jumper hit the rim and bounced out. With 3.9 seconds left, senior Maverick Desuasido blocked a Pinewood pass, Arcilla tapped the deflection to Desuasido, who dished to Edwards who hit a shot behind the arc. The student crowd stormed the court and engulfed Edwards and his teammates on a senior night to remember.
Braxton Kimura led Pinewood with 16 points.
