Menlo (12-0) defeats Harvard-Westlake 5-1 in championship
For the first time in eight seasons, the Menlo School boys’ tennis team captured the prestigious All-American Invitational Championship, defeating Harvard-Westlake 5-1 in the final Saturday at The Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates.
The Knights (12-0) swept Gilman (Wi) and Canyon Crest in the opening rounds, then beat University-Irvine in a rematch of the 2025 CIF-state championship 5-1 to get to the tournament title match.
Knights senior Arki Temsamani was named All-American after he went 4-0, winning at No. 2 singles and No.1 doubles with Yuanye Ma and Maximus Chan.
“Honestly, I’m over the moon with joy,” Temsamani said. “This team is really special and I had a feeling that this group of guys could be the ones to win this tournament. Ever since my freshman year, the seniors were always talking about how we hadn’t beaten University Irvine and hadn’t won the All-American Invitational. This year we did both of those things.”
The team was down four sets early on against Harvard-Westlake.
“It really tested our boys. It was not an easy match,” Menlo Coach Francis Sargeant said. “I’m really proud of the boys and how they came together, showed great compusure and how they weathered the storm.”
Knights senior Yuanye Ma went 3-1, winning twice at No.1 singles and once at No.1 doubles. Freshman Maximus Chan finished 3-0 with wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. Lucas Huang, a junior, went 3-0 with a win at No. 3 sngles in the final and two wins at No. 2 singles with junior James Park and freshman Miles Burnett. Burnett and sophomore Riley Huang had three doubles wins.
“This is a highlight of the year to come to this tournament. The boys had some amazing results, and its such a great bonding trip,” said Sargeant, who praised the entire team, and especially the seniors: Temsamani, Ma, Matthew Franc and Brad Engel, for the support and leadership. All 16 Knights played in the tournament.
The Knights had finished third each year - still a feat at this unofficial national championship - but this year was a breakthrough.
“It’s a really special moment for our team, ” Engel said. “We’ve had a lot of heartbreak in this tournament in years past, so it’s even more fulfilling to finally finish the job this year.”
