Drama Reaches for the Moon

Upper School Drama is among the very first high schools to perform The Old Man and the Old Moon. It’s a touching tale that combines playful stagecraft with shadow puppetry, indie-folk music, and simple storytelling to create pure theater magic.

A whimsical, transcendent, and magical journey to the moon and back, the show will be performed four times: Friday, February 8, 7:30 pm; Saturday, February 9, 2:00 and 7:30 pm; and Sunday, February 10, 5:00 pm; in Florence Moore Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students.

The Old Man and The Old Moon is a song-filled folktale—presented by 27 student musicians, technicians, and actors. It combines playful stagecraft with shadow puppetry, indie-folk music, and simple storytelling to create pure theater magic.
The Old Man and The Old Moon, created by the PigPen Theatre Company, tells the story of an Old Man whose duty in life is to fill the leaky moon with liquid light. This epic tale takes the Old Man on a quest to find his wife who is traveling to the end of the world searching for a tune from a memory that both the Old Man and the Old Woman share but neither can remember. When the Old Man abandons his post in search of his wife, the moon grows dark, and the world tips toward chaos. Only on this folk music-filled journey can he and the world be reconciled between the pulling tides of love and duty, resistance and acceptance, permanence and change.

Steven Minning, Director of Creative Arts and Upper School Drama, says, “When I first saw the show in New York, I was struck by its creativity, its storytelling, and its heart. It is guaranteed to gently pluck at the heartstrings,” he adds. “This show is unique and challenging in that it is both simple and extraordinary at once, where a simple story and homespun theatrical devices are transformed into something extraordinarily beautiful.”
