Boys’ soccer rolls past SHC 6-1

Six scorers for the Knights in balanced attack
Menlo sophomore Alessandro Velasquez scored and assisted on tow other goals in a 6-1 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral.

12.17.2021 – In a University Showcase opener, the Menlo boys’ soccer team registered a commanding 6-1 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday night
The game was fairly even in the first half with SHC controlling possession, and Menlo looking dangerous on the counter. Midway through the half, sophomore captain Alessandro Velazquez put Menlo ahead early. He scored his first of the season with a great finish in the bottom corner from the top of the box. Ten minutes later, fellow sophomore Andre Gonzalez doubled the lead with a similarly emphatic finish.
Menlo (2-1-2) opened the second half with two goals in the first four minutes. First, senior captain Daniel Louie scored on an assist from senior Jonah Blaydes-Greenberg. A few minutes later, sophomore Alex Boesch added one with an assist from Velazquez. Blaydes-Greenberg scored later on another assist from Velazquez before senior captain Emilio Velten rounded out the scoring. Senior Colin Thomas was in goal for the victory.
“We have been improving every time we step on the field this preseason, but haven’t really gotten the results to show it. Today the scoreline is a little flattering against one of the perennial powerhouses in CCS but the boys deserve it after all the hard work they’ve put in. We will look to finish the trip off strongly tomorrow against a strong University team,” Menlo coach Marc Kerrest said.
Menlo and University square off at 1:30 pm Saturday at Beach Chalet.
