Girls’ tennis takes fifth at Golden State Classic

Knights go 3-1 in 16-team tournament
Menlo's Sofia Labatt went 4-0 in the Golden State Classic

The Menlo girls’ tennis team finished fifth in the Sixth Annual Golden State Classic - a 16-team tournament of top teams up and down the state - at home Friday and Saturday.
Borne out of a brainstorm from Menlo coach Bill Shine and Monta Vista coach Gene Fortino, the Classic began in 2015 at Menlo School and Stanford University.
The tournament
features an impressive lineup of some of the top teams in the state.
The Knights (15-4) defeated Campolindo before suffering a loss to Menlo-Atherton 3-3 (7-6 sets tiebreaker. It is believed to be the only loss to Menlo-Atherton in at least three decades. On Saturday, Menlo bounced back with a pair of wins Saturday over Amador Valley and a sweep of Miramonte.
Cupertino shut out Los Altos to win the title.
Menlo senior Sofia Labatt went 4-0 with a No. 2 singles win and three wins at No. 1 doubles - two with sophomore Izzy Klugman and one with senior Charlotte Makoni. Klugman also went 4-0 with a win at No. 3 singles and No. 1 singles wins and Makoni went 4-0 with doubles victories. Sophomore Kate Hsia was 4-0 with three doubles and a singles win while senior Charlotte Yao finished 3-0 with two singles wins and a doubles win. Westermann went 3-1 with singles wins at Nos 2 and 3 and a No.1 doubles win with Klugman.
