Boys’ soccer defeats Woodside 3-1, falls to Sequoia

Hicker lands first win as Knights coach

12.9.2022 – The Menlo boys’ soccer team jumped ahead early and defeated host Woodside 3-1 Friday to give Coach Daniel Hicker his first Knights’ victory.
Juniors Sandro Velazquez scored twice and assisted on another, junior Andre Gonzalez Lombera added a goal and Ben Bishop picked up the win.
“I’m proud of our players and coaching staff. We continue to turn the dial on our discipline and rhythm of our play,” Hicker said. “We managed the game well. It’s a special moment for me, and to share it with this group.”

Six minutes in, Gonzalez Lombera took a feed from Velazquez to give the Knights an early edge. Velazquez looped in a stunner four minutes later, and Menlo took a 2-0 advantage into the half.
Woodside scored with 26 minutes left to draw within one.
Three minutes later, Velazquez converted a penalty kick and the Knights held on to improve to 1-1-2. Bishop finished with nine saves.
Menlo next plays in the University Showcase at Beach Chalet next weekend.

Sequoia 1, Menlo 0

12.7.2022 – The Menlo boys’ soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Sequoia in non-league play on Wednesday,
The Knights opened the match with a flurry of shots, but the teams stayed knotted at 0-0 by halftime. Sequoia scored with 20:11 left in the second half, and held on for the win.
“This was a night and day performance from last week,” Menlo first-year coach Daniel Hicker said. “It was unfortunate to not get one or two deserved goals. We made some technical errors that cost us. We are finding our rhythm as a program and look forward to this coming Friday.”

Menlo next plays at Woodside at 4:30 Friday
