The Family Who Mistook Illness for Identity: A Triptych of Neurological Narratives

Ariya Kaushek’s “The Family Who Mistook Illness for Identity” tells three interconnected stories about family members living with Parkinson’s disease, anorexia nervosa, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Blending neuroscience with personal reflection, Kaushek explores how illness can both define and distort identity—not only for those affected but for their loved ones as well. Inspired by Oliver Sacks, the piece highlights how neurological disorders shape relationships, reveal resilience, and challenge the line between biology and self. It ultimately portrays illness as a shared experience that reshapes family bonds and the understanding of what it means to be whole.
