Biography

“Belonging is belonging to yourself first. Speaking your truth, telling your story and never betraying yourself for other people. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are. It requires you to be who you are…” – Brené Brown

Who are you? What shapes your identity? Where do you find your sense of belonging? This course delves into these fundamental questions, exploring how the search for identity is often influenced by conflicting societal and cultural factors.

Students will embark on a profound exploration of language and Latino realities in this diverse, interdisciplinary course. The primary objective is to enhance students’ proficiency in Spanish as they engage with various mediums such as news, film, art, music, and literature. Through these channels, students will delve into the evolving experiences of immigrants and first-generation individuals, gaining a deeper understanding of their complex and multifaceted narratives. While these stories predominantly focus on the Latino and Chicano contexts, the universal pursuit of belonging transcends borders, inviting students to reflect on their own place in the world.

As a culminating project, students will conduct interviews with Spanish-speaking immigrants, providing a unique opportunity to explore real-life narratives. The formal reflections presented to the class will encapsulate the rich insights gained from these interactions, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate tapestry of identity and belonging.

With some independent preparation, students who take this course may feel equipped to take the AP Spanish Language exam.
