NorCals: Girls’ basketball advances to Round 2

Knights keep home-game advantage

2.28.2023 – The Menlo girls’ basketball team will be playing the second round of the CIF Div. IV NorCal playoffs in front of a home crowd against nearby Summit Shasta on Thursday.
The No. 7 seed Knights defeated No.10 West Valley of Cottonwood 64-51 to advance against No. 15 Summit Shasta of Daly City at 7:00 pm on Thursday.
Just as in the CCS Championships, the Knights started quickly and never looked back, and the intensity started even before the pre-game huddle.
“We’ve got to play like this is the last time we play together, and give it everything we got,” I think we all went in with that mentality. That was the key to our win tonight, passing up good shots for great shots, making the extra passes.”
Menlo stormed to an 18-9 advantage, scoring nearly every time they had the ball - senior Jordan Brooks, sophomore Ruiqi Liu and Karen Xin each scored five in the quarter for a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Xin finished with 24 points and eight assists. Senior Riley Jensen posted 14 points and six rebounds while Liu finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, four in the second period alone.
Senior Jordan Brooks posted eight points, five rebounds and three assists.
“We’re so lucky to be playing at home,” Xin said. “I don’t think I really realized how much the home court meant until this year,” Xin added. “Being at home, it’s huge, you know the court, the people, the environment.”
Mya Thomas had 15 and Kayla Wiley 13 for West Valley, which finished the season 18-11.
