Girls’ water polo posts wins over Valley Chr., Leland

Knights defeat fellow CCS Open foes from last season

Menlo senior Kenya Cassidy tallied five goals and four steals in Menlo's 8-7 win over Leland.

In a matchup between 2022 CCS Open contenders, the Menlo girls’ water polo team beat visiting Leland 8-7 on Saturday.
The Knights trailed 5-3 heading into the final quarter, and were down 6-5 with 4 minutes to go in the game. Senior Kenya Cassidy scored her fifth goal of the game with 1:43 left then freshman Sabina Sutaria scored on a breakaway for the go-ahead goal at 7-6. The Chargers fired a long shot taking just 3 seconds off the clock to tie at 7.

Menlo junior Kate Hirsch netted her first goal of the game with 1:20 left and the Knights held on for the one-goal win.
Along with her five goals, Cassidy had four steals. Menlo senior Scarlett Gamble had a goal and assisted on two more and junior junior Sofia Flierl made two steals. Freshman Sophia Maldonado made four saves.


Menlo 19, Valley Christian 8

Menlo junior Sofia Flierl and freshman Sabina Sutaria combined for nine goals as Menlo girls’ water polo sailed past host Valley Christian.
Knights freshman Sophia Maldonado picked up 12 saves while senior Kate Ward posted a hat trick. Kate Hirsch, a junior, and Scarlett Gamble, a senior, each had two goals while Itzel Salgado, Alisha Jain, Brooke Dunsby added goals.
