CCS soccer quarterfinals: Boys defeat Aragon; girls fall 1-0

Boys play Los Gatos in semis Wednesday

Menlo senior Andre Gonzalez Lombera scored twice in a 5-3 CCS quarterfinal win
After charging into the second half of a 5-3 victory over Aragon, the Menlo boys’ soccer team is headed to the CCS Div. II semifinals Wednesday.
The No. 2 seeded Knights will face Los Gatos, a 3-0 winner over Fremont on Saturday night. Menlo (15-3-3) will host No. 3 Los Gatos (13-2-4) on Wednesday.
In the quarterfinal, senior Alessandro Velazquez, who scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the second half, struck first giving Menlo a 1-0 lead. The Dons answered minutes later to tie then went ahead before senior Andre Gonzalez Lombera scored right before the half to tie 2-2.
Ten minutes into the second half, Gonzalez again scored to give the Knights a 3-2 lead before Aragon answered to tie at 3. Velazquez scored his second with 10 minutes left, and senior Eric Schmidtke added an insurance goal in stoppage time.
Along with his two goals, Velazquez assisted on another. Schmidtke finished with a goal and assist and fellow seniors Yasin Abdulkariem had an assist and Ben Bishop picked up the win in goal.
CCS Div. IV-Girls
In a first half tug of war Menlo girls’ soccer exchanged shots with host Gunn in Saturday’s semifinal. The Titans scored late in the second half and withstood a flurry of solid Knights attempts late in the second.
Menlo finishes the season with a 9-7-5 overall mark and third in the West Bay Athletic League with a 5-3-2 record.
