About the Team

Menlo School has been a competitive force in the Peninsula and West Bay Athletic Leagues and a regular visitor to the Central Coast Section playoffs. Menlo has won three section titles in the past six years. In 2012, the team won its first CCS title outright and defended its league championship in 2013. The Knights returned to the title game, winning it in 2014 and 2016 and advancing to the final in 2015. Menlo shared a CCS Div. II championship three consecutive seasons from 1988 to 1990 with a tie in the finals each time. The goal of the program is to provide tools for the team members to become good players by focusing on technical and tactical skills and challenging the players through training.

ABOUT THE COACH

Ross Ireland

Ireland returns to Menlo having first served as head coach in 2015-2016 when he led the Knights to a CCS Div. II Championship—its sixth title all time. The following year, the Knights finished second in league and fell on penalty kicks in the CCS quarterfinals. From 2013-2015, he served as Menlo’s JV girls’ coach. Before coming to Menlo, he coached Castilleja for eight seasons. In addition to his strong coaching background, Ireland brings years of international playing experience. He grew up playing soccer on the streets of Liverpool, then refined his skills as a player with St. George in Sydney, New Zealand’s National Youth Selection, FC Barcelona, and Southampton FC England. In 1994, he co-founded World Soccer Inc., a professionally run youth soccer organization that coaches teams within the Stanford, Palo Alto, and MVLA soccer clubs. He’s led some of the strongest youth teams in the region and developed many players who have gone on to successful college and pro careers.
